108th Annual General Meeting

Renfrew & Area Chamber of Commerce

7.00 a.m. February 23, 2009

Ma-te-way Activity Centre

A very snowy morning did not deter too many people from joining us in what turned out to be a wonderful AGM. 70 people enjoyed an informal meet and greet, than a terrific breakfast catered by Charlie’s Catering followed by the very moving, amusing and inspirational guest speaker David Smith.

David spoke about “people getting involved can make a difference”; if any one of us can touch one person to make a difference in their lives David believes we have done something to be a better person.

At 77 years of age, David continues to devote his time, efforts and resources to those less fortunate. He encouraged and thanked the crowd that devotes their passions to the community.

Than as a topping to our great morning David offered an additional door prize, a bar-b-que catering for 10 people. Lona Logan Scully was the lucky recipient.

Catherine Howard, owner of Brides and Blooms, donated additional door prizes.

Lee Sharpe accepted the invitation from the Chamber to introduce David to our group and she was acknowledged by David for her efforts supporting the Sunshine Coach and most recently her fundraising efforts for the new proposed auditorium at the Bonnechere Manor.

Kevin had one more presentation along with heartfelt thanks. Barbara Symington has resigned as an honorary board member to spend more time with her family.

Over the years Barb has been a constant face of the chamber. Her enormous volunteer efforts are always greatly appreciated and will be missed. Barb had agreed to help out at the upcoming Annual Awards Dinner, than she is off to pursue other ventures.

Cheryl Gallant the Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke Member of Parliament as well as our Town of Renfrew Mayor, Sandi Heins added a few words of support and appreciation for Renfrew’s Chamber of Commerce and our community.

  • Area business people and community leaders are honoured in the following six categories; Citizen of the Year, Lifetime Business Achievement, Community Organization, Outstanding Business, President's Award and Chamber Member of the Year.

Congratulations to all Nominees and Award Recipients

Since 1976 it has been our privilege to present awards to many citizens who live and work in Renfrew and the surrounding area and who give their time and efforts for the betterment of all in our community.

On May 6, 2009 we again honoured the people in our community with five well-deserved awards.

Thanks to M.C. Barbara Symington and Past President Jon Pole for a job well done.

2008 Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Eleanor Donaldson by Chamber Past President Jon Pole.

Eleanor's numerous and varied volunteer activities with the Bonnechere Manor have made a difference in so many lives.  As her nominators pointed out, she has enriched the lives of so many with her compassion and dedication to others.  Congratulations Eleanor.

2008 Lifetime Business Achievement Award recipient Jeff Scott.

Jeff is the 3rd generation Scott to be heading Scott & Sons Hardware which was founded in 1917 by his grandfather.  The business has prospered due to a firm commitment to superior customer service, a willingness to change with the times and a dedication to community.  Congratulations to Jeff, his family and staff.

2008 Business Achievement Award was presented to Bob Flynn, The Korner Hutch by Norm Anderson, Renfrew Industrial Commission.

Since opening the store in 1985 Bob has sold quality Canadian made furniture and has volunteered actively with the BIA, Valleyfest, Kinsmen and the Downtown Boys Band. Congratulations Bob.

2008 President's Award was presented to Terri Quinlan, Curves.  Chamber President Kevin Bossy chose Terri to recognize the courage and determination shown after a devastating fire wiped out her new business just 2 days after it opened.  Congratulations and Best Wishes in your new business.
2008 Community Organization of the Year was presented to Renfrew's Sesquicentennial (150th) Celebration Committee.  Committee members Gladys & Doug Sidock, Cathy & Norm Dagg, Barbara Symington, Jeff Scott and Doug Miller brought us event after event that allowed people throughout the County to participate in and enjoy this once in a lifetime, year-long celebration.  Congratulations to all committee members.  What a year you gave us.
